I’m a journalist and writer. In June of 2013, I came to Cairo to study Arabic as a CASA fellow at the American University of Cairo. These are my thoughts, notes and occasional translations.
About the blog title: I spent a few years living in Egypt as a child, and one of my most enduring memories is the flame tree which I could see from our balcony in our flat in Alexandria. Now, back in Cairo over 20 years later, I see these same striking trees every day when I walk around our neighborhood. They’re a source of nostalgia and a handy symbol for this particular incendiary moment in Egypt’s history.
